Buckingham Athletic Sports & Social Club is a non-profit making organisation and has been set up for the benefit of the local community. Its aim has always been to provide a safe and friendly environment where families can meet and socialise. The club is situated in the heart of Buckingham alongside the “Riverside Walk” and although primarily recognised for football it is keen to diversify to other activities and help outside organisations. It currently has sections for football, Darts, Pool and Dominoes but currently interested in setting up a Golf Society.
It has been working with local charity organisations to raise money for their own needs – and has close links with schools and other youth organisations. We should not under estimate how much the club has changed and advanced over the last 5 years, both in and outside the clubhouse. We have moved from a shack that was situated on a dirt track and about to fall down, to a modern and purpose built building that can now comfortably hold 100 people for any sort of function. Progress outside of the clubhouse has also been substantial with the completion of a new dressing room suite which are of the highest quality and meet all of the FA recommendations.
There have been so many changes that have made the difference but the committee continue to progress and look for ways to improve the facilities. In the last few months the club has not only opened a new member’s bar which allows members to continue to enjoy the facilities even if the hall has been hired out for a private function. Along with that we have just opened a new outside decking area where families can come to sit and enjoy a drink, while their children can play in a safe environment on the grass areas outside the club.
Subtle additions have also been made inside with the installation of a new sound system and a new lighting system for live shows. For entertainment you have live sport with 3 big screens with all of the big football and sporting events being shown both during the week and at weekends. A pool table and a darts board are also available to everybody using the facility.
Over the last 6 years the committee have been quietly working away in the background putting together the foundations for a Community Sports & Social Club that everybody can be proud to be associated with.
With so many clubs and pubs disappearing around the country it is rare to see a club making such strides forward, the current setup is a great springboard and has huge potential but we now need the community to take advantage of it. As Buckingham continues to expand we want the Sports & Social Club to become the hub of the community where a single centre could offer so much for the families living in the town.
Our key aim is continue to build the membership and the activities it can provide. It also wants to continue to build our ties with local charities and organisations and help where we can promote their own needs. Why not pop along to see us although there is a yearly subscription of £5 to use the facilities, non-members are very welcome. The one thing we can guarantee is a warm welcome and we are family friendly so bring the kids.
